News : Retiring CJI goes silent

Outgoing
CJI, J. Ranjan Gogoi did not speak at farewell function disappointed SC lawyers

New Delhi, 16th November 2019. A grand, highly impressive farewell function was organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association and others at the beautifully decorated farewell stage in the lawns of the Supreme Court this afternoon to bid a touching farewell to the outgoing Chief Justice of India, Mr. Ranjan Gogoi. May be it happened for the first time in the history of Supreme Court that outgoing (retiring) Chief Justice of India refused/failed to say any word.

Farewell function of J. Ranjan Gogoi

The outgoing
Chief Justice of India, Mr. Ranjan Gogoi and the next CJI Justice Sharad Arvind
Bobde were sitting on the dais. The President of the Bar Association of
the Supreme Court
(SCBA) and the Vice-President were sitting on the
dais and Mr. K.K. Venugopal, Attorney-General of India was also present. The
outgoing Chief Justice and some other Hon’ble judges and officials of SCBA were
presented flowers bouquets after an organized reception committee of the SCBA.

“It must have given a shock to
hundreds of Supreme Court advocates as well as the special guests who were
invited on the occasion when the announcement came from the dais that there
shall be no speeches by anybody. It was also announced that the Chief Justice
of India shall make no speech nor anybody else. Must have given a shocking
surprise to most of the audience and the organizers when they learnt that CJI
has expressed that he shall not be speaking on the occasion, who shall be
retiring on November 17, 2019. This day, the Friday was the last working in the
Supreme Court. Naturally, the judges and the lawyers of the Supreme Court shall
not get any other opportunity to hear the outgoing CJI who shall be retiring on
17th of this month.” This was the communication conveyed with surprise and
disappointment by those who were attending the farewell function and were
eagerly waiting for the message that might have come from the side of outgoing
Chief Justice of India.

Prof.
Bhim Singh called this occasion as most unfortunate and unpleasant as this kind
of situation

Prof. Bhim Singh, Sr. Executive Member of Supreme Court Bar Association who was also a party with organizers of the farewell function being elected Member of the SCBA called this occasion as most unfortunate and unpleasant as this kind of situation, he said was never witnessed, experienced during his days in the Supreme Court of India as an Advocate since 1973. The Hon’ble Chief Justice today preferred keeping silent, may be, he shall speak tomorrow but the question that emerges from today’s happening may be answered by someone someday.
