Cricket watchers are like zombies and drug addicts!

By Justice Markandey Katju

India cricket mein kya haari ki saara mulk maatam manaane laga, jaise koi sar par pahaad gir pada.

I regard all those who watch cricket as unthinking zombies or drug addicts.

They are like the Roman mob who saw gladiator fights.

The gladiators fought to entertain the bloodthirsty Roman crowd in the arena. The only thing different now is there is no bloodshed. But both crowds, cricket watchers and gladiator fight watchers are/were like unthinking zombies and drug addicts.

Cricket is an opium of the Indian masses, given to them to divert their attention, at least temporarily, from their real issues and their miserable existence.
