“The British agent Tagore

Many Bengalis have asked why I called Tagore a British agent ? I have given my reasons in my blogs on him in my blog Satyam Bruyat, but I may repeat them here. The really great Bengali writers whom I respect were Sarad Chandra Chattopadhyaya and Kazi Nazrul Islam. They strongly attacked the inhuman feudal caste system. In particular, Sarad Chandra strongly attacked women’s’ oppression in his stories.

Sarad Chandra was even taking literature in a revolutionary direction ( see his novel Pather Dabi, which was about a revolutionary organisation, and which was banned by the British rulers.

It is said that at one time the price of a copy of Pather Dabi was the same as the price of a Mauser pistol ).This scared the Britishers, who promoted Tagore through their agent Yeats, who got him the Nobel Prize ( though Yeats later wrote in a letter in 1935 to William Rothenstein that Tagore writes sentimental rubbish ). Tagore served British interests by diverting literature from the realistic and revolutionary direction in which Sarad Chandra and Kazi Nazrul were taking it, to reactionary mysticism and spiritualism ( see Gitanjali, Klanti, Agnibeena bajao, etc ), which is the bulk of what Tagore wrote, and which is nonsense in a poor country like India. Do poor people need food, jobs, healthcare etc or spiritualism and mysticism ?

Many Bengalis refer to Tagore refusing knighthood in protest against the Jalianwala Bagh massacre to ‘prove’ his patriotism. But the very offer of knighthood to him proves the contrary. Why should the British rulers offer knighthood to a genuine Indian patriot ? They never offered it to Sarad Chandra or Kazi Nazrul. To my mind his refusal was just a stunt .The problem with most ( not all ) Bengalis is that they treat Tagore ( and Subhas Chandra Bose ) like holy cows, and anyone who criticises them, giving rational arguments, is met with abuse, since they are incapable of refuting them by logic.”
