Resignation of PB Mehta and Arvind Subramaniam from Ashoka University

Regarding Recent Developments at Ashoka University

Respected Justice Katju

Sir, I write this email to you to shed some light on the recent developments that have taken place at Ashoka University (Sonipat, Haryana). I am a final year student at the University.

Our university prides itself on being a liberal and progressive space, mainly due to the mindset, ideas and opinions of its students and faculty. Especially in the current times, the University has stood as a pioneer of freedom and liberty. However, what has ensued in the past 24 hours suggests otherwise.

Yesterday, eminent political scientist, scholar and critic, Professor Pratap Bhanu Mehta, resigned as a Professor. Professor Mehta has played a vital part in what Ashoka is today. Truly, he embodies all that Ashoka stands for. More importantly, he has remained a vocal critic of the current regime.

Earlier, in 2019, he had resigned as the Vice-Chancellor, again in a shock move, which raised some eyebrows. His resignation yesterday, however, has made a lot of things clear. Certain sources from the University have reported that the ‘resignation’ was endorsed by the Founders of the University. This endorsement, according to a senior faculty member with whom our source spoke, was motivated by an understanding that if Prof. Mehta resigned, the University’s efforts to acquire a new plot of land to expand the campus would get much smoother. This has been reported by our student-run newspaper, the Edict. You can find the report here: http://the-edict.in/…/pratap-bhanu-mehta-resigns…/

Just a few hours ago, eminent economist and former Chief Economic Adviser, Professor Arvind Subramanian also tendered his resignation, citing the circumstances involving Pratap Bhanu Mehta’s exit and the fact Ashoka University can no longer provide space for academic expression and freedom.

Clearly, in your words, your honour, there is something rotten in the state of Denmark.

I request you, with all my heart, to please take up this issue. Our academic spaces are being penetrated by those ruling from the top, and it is inevitable, that this way, in due time, we will become nothing but mouthpieces of the administration.

I thank you for providing me with the opportunity to write to you. I’m hopeful that with your reach, this will spread to more people who will become aware of what is happening.

I am attaching 3 separate reports regarding the developments.

Yours sincerely

A Disappointed & Dissatisfied Ashokan
