Some-facts-about-India

India is broadly a country of immigrants

By Justice Markandey Katju

The original inhabitants of India were not the Dravidians ( who too came into India from the north-west, like the Aryans ) but the pre-Dravidian tribals e.g. Bhils, Gonds, Santhals, Todas etc ( see my article ‘What is India‘ online ). These are only about 6-7% of our population today.

So India is broadly a country of immigrants, like North America, the difference being that whereas immigrants came into North America mainly from Europe ( and later from other countries too ) over the last 4-5 hundred years, in India they have been coming for thousands of years.

Why were people coming into India ?

That is because people migrate from uncomfortable areas to comfortable ones. Why would anyone migrate from India to Afghanistan which is cold, covered with snow for several months in a year, rocky, mountainous, with harsh and uncomfortable terrain?

Earlier, before the Industrial Revolution, there was no modern industry, and there were agricultural societies everywhere. For agriculture what is required is level land, fertile soil, water for irrigation, etc. All this was in abundance in our subcontinent.

This explains the diversity of India. Each group of immigrants brought with them their own culture, religion, language, etc.

Hence the only policy which will keep the country united and on the path of progress is the policy of Suleh-e-Kul of the great Mughal Emperor Akbar, who gave equal respect to all communities ( see my article ‘ Emperor Akbar—the real Father of the Indian Nation ’ on my blog Satyam Bruyat ).

Any other policy, such as the policy of religious polarisation being followed today, will inevitably lead to chaos and disaster.
