Women’s reservation is a gimmick

By Justice Markandey Katju

The Women’s Reservation Bill, proposing to reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women, was passed by the Rajya Sabha in 2010, but it was not placed before the Lok Sabha.

I regard Women’s reservation as a gimmick.

Women’s reservation in India really means indirect rule by men, the wife being only a front. Thus, we have MLA pati, sarpanch pati, pradhan pati, etc. This is because Indian society is still semi feudal ( as evident from rampant casteism&communalism ). So women’s reservation will only be a gimmick, most of such women only being puppets controlled by their husbands from behind.

Thus, Rabri Devi became CM of Bihar in July 1997 when her husband Lalu Yadav had to resign following an arrest warrant issued against him in the Fodder scam. But it was common knowledge that she was only a front for Lalu who was controlling from behind.

I don’t say all such women will be puppets, but 90-95% of them will be. So what is the point in reserving one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures for women?

It is not a matter of Modiji to take care of the country, the national government should be formed – said Justice Katju
