Latest update on Chandipura virus outbreak in Gujarat
Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases have been reported from Gujarat in children below 15 years of age since early June 2024. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as of 31 July 2024, 148 AES cases have been reported. Of these, 140 have been reported from 24 districts of Gujarat, 4 from Madhya Pradesh, 3 from Rajasthan and 1 from Maharashtra. 59 people affected by the syndrome have died and 51 cases have been confirmed with Chandipura virus (CHPV). The Director General of Health Services (DGHS) and Director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) jointly reviewed the situation today.
