Power of the pen: Lesson hidden in the story

Impressive story of Kayasthas without weapons

New Delhi, 03 November 2024: Justice Markandey Katju shared an interesting story on the power of Kayasthas in his Facebook post. In this post, Justice Katju explained how the Kayastha community, which prefers the power of the pen, has effectively dominated others even without any weapon. The story depicts an incident between an old Kayastha and an army officer of a Nawab, proving that the pen is more powerful than the sword.

The post is as follows:

The power of Kayasthas

Chitragupta is the god of Kayasthas, a caste in India . Kayasthas wield the pen, not the sword, which Rajputs wield, and it is said that the pen is mightier than the sword. Here is a story which illustrates this :

In the reign of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Avadh one day an elderly Kayastha gentleman having white hair and spectacles, and wearing an achkan and dhoti, was walking slowly on a street in Lucknow. He was a clerk in a government office which dispensed salaries to government officials.

From the other side galloping on a horse came an officer of the Nawab's army ( let us call him Captain Muhammad Ali Khan ) . When the officer was near the elderly clerk he shouted '' Hato raaste se '' and with a whip hit the poor elderly clerk on the face, who fell down.

The next day the officer went to collect his monthly salary. Unfortunately for him, he had to go to the window of the same clerk he had struck the previous day. He gave his name, and asked for his salary.

The clerk recognised him as the same person who had struck him. He looked at him, with his spectacles lowered on his nose, and said '' But you are not Captain Muhammad Ali Khan. How can I give you his salary ? ''.

'' What nonsense are you talking '' said the officer. '' I am that person ''

The clerk took out his records, which showed Captain Muhammad Ali Khan as a person having one eye, one ear, and four front teeth missing from his face.

As a result, the officer had to get one eye, one ear, and four front teeth removed before he could get his salary.

Moral of the story : dont mess with Kayasthas. Without a weapon they can do you considerable harm.
