On Guru Nanak’s birthday, celebrate the Sikh legacy of compassion, humanity, and selfless service
On Gurpurab 2025, Justice Katju pays tribute to Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the Sikh spirit of ‘seva’—selfless service and compassion for all humanity.
Gurpurab
By Justice Markandey KatjuToday, 5th November 2025, is Gurpurab, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion.
I have known many communities in the world, but I found the spirit of service to others among Sikhs more developed than in any other community, which is because of the spirit of 'seva' taught by the great guru.
Whenever there is a calamity anywhere, whether it is floods in Patna, a forest fire in California, or an earthquake elsewhere, Sikhs are the first to rush and help the victims, opening langars to feed them.
Happy Gurpurab to my Sikh brothers and sisters!
Long live the Sikhs !
