The Peshawar mosque blast

By Justice Markandey Katju

The bomb blast in a mosque in a high-security zone in Peshawar, a city in northwestern Pakistan, on Monday evening, when many people, mainly law enforcement officials, had gathered for evening prayers, has left at least 100 people dead, and 217 injured, with the mosque having been reduced to rubble.

I am sorry for this great tragedy. At the same time I would like to say that when you create a Frankenstein monster called Pakistan, such incidents are inevitable, being a logical consequence of such a creation. Let me explain.

I have said many times that the Partition of India in India in 1947 and the creation of an Islamic state called Pakistan, was a historical British swindle, aimed at keeping India weak and backward so that it does not emerge as a modern industrial giant ( like China ) and thus become a rival to Western industry

Pakistan was created on the basis of the two-nation theory, that Hindus and Muslims are two different nations. On the face of it, this theory was bogus, and part of the wicked British divide-and-rule policy.

A nation has to have a definite territory. But Hindus and Muslims have been living together in the same towns and villages in various parts of the Indian subcontinent for centuries. They have not been living in separate territories. So how can they be separate nations? The very idea of Hindus and Muslims being two separate nations is bogus. But it was propagated relentlessly by Jinnah and other British agents until it culminated in the tragedy of Partition in 1947, ( in which half a million people were killed, and millions disdplaced ), and creation of a theological state called Pakistan.

The Indian subcontinent is a region of tremendous diversity, as it is a place where immigrants have been coming in for thousands of years.

Each group of immigrants who came into the Indian subcontinent brought with them their own religion, language, culture, customs, etc. Thus the only policy which can work here is secularism and giving equal respect to all religions and communities. This was the policy of the great Emperor Akbar, whom I regard as the real Father of the Indian nation, who gave equal respect to all, ( and that is why the Mughal Empire lasted so long ).

While condemning the bomb blast, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said ” targeting the House of Allah is proof that the attackers have nothing to do with Islam ”.

But which Islam? Shia or Sunni? Deobandi or Barelvi ? And which sect ( fiqh ) within these? And what about Ahmadis?

Shias, who differ from Sunnis because they regard the first 3 Khalifas as usurpers, are often attacked and killed.

Dargahs, which Barelvis visit, are often bombed, as the Wahabi-type extremists regard them as places where graves are worshipped ( which the Wahabis regard as ‘shirk‘, and therefore to be condemned ). The people who go to dargahs are ‘wajib al qatl’ ( deserving to be killed ).

And of course Ahmadis in Pakistan are pariahs, treated like Jews in Nazi Germany because they allegedly deny that Mohammad was the last prophet.

After the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, the extremist elements in Pakistan, like the TLP and TTP have been further emboldened.

The Shahbaz Sharif Govt is weak, and can only speak homilies and express condemnation over such incidents, but do little else.

One does not know which group committed the Peshawar bombing, but what can be said with certainty is that more such incidents will occur regularly in the future, as that is the inevitable consequence of creating the monster called Pakistan.
