Human Rights Day 2024: NHRC Registers Over 23 Lakh Cases, President Murmu to Attend Event

New Delhi, 10 December 2024: On the eve of Human Rights Day 2024, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) revealed that more than 23 lakh cases of human rights violations have been registered since its inception in 1993. The Commission has also recommended a total relief amount of ₹256.57 crore to the victims of these violations over the years. This statement was made by the NHRC on Monday ahead of the significant day that commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations on December 10, 1948.

As part of the Human Rights Day celebrations, President Droupadi Murmu will be the chief guest at an event in New Delhi on Tuesday, marking the global observance. The NHRC, in its official statement, expressed its commitment to upholding human dignity and protecting the fundamental rights of every individual.

Vijaya Bharti Sayani's Message for Human Rights Day

On the eve of Human Rights Day, Vijaya Bharti Sayani, the acting chairperson of NHRC, shared a heartfelt message. In her address, she emphasized the importance of human rights as the foundation for a just society and called for collective global action to ensure these rights are protected. "Human Rights Day serves as a powerful reminder that every person is born with inalienable rights," she said, adding that this year’s theme—"Our Rights, Our Future, Now"—reinforces the belief that human rights are not just an aspiration but a practical tool for building a better future.

India’s Contribution to Global Human Rights

In her message, Sayani highlighted India’s vital contribution to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She also noted that India’s philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" ("The world is one family") continues to guide the nation’s approach to global human rights issues.

As the NHRC celebrates its role in promoting human rights, Sayani urged citizens and global institutions to unite in addressing pressing challenges like climate change, terrorism, and conflicts that continue to lead to widespread violations. The Commission is particularly committed to strengthening the human rights framework in the Global South, collaborating with national human rights institutions worldwide.

NHRC’s Efforts and Impact

Since its formation, the NHRC has played a critical role in advancing human rights discourse in India. With over 23 lakh cases registered, the Commission has become a cornerstone in addressing the challenges related to human dignity and social justice. Through its extensive capacity-building programs, NHRC has been proactive in identifying issues such as discrimination, exploitation, and violence, and has worked tirelessly to provide redress to victims.

On this Human Rights Day, NHRC reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its efforts to ensure the protection of human rights for every individual in India and across the globe. With the adoption of India’s Human Rights Protection Act and its alignment with international human rights standards, the NHRC remains determined to combat any threats to human dignity, working to build a peaceful and just world.

As Human Rights Day 2024 approaches, the National Human Rights Commission stands firm in its commitment to protect and promote the rights of every individual. With significant achievements over the years and ongoing efforts to combat human rights violations, NHRC continues to uphold the values of justice, equality, and human dignity. Let this day be a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure that the rights of all individuals are respected, regardless of their background, beliefs, or identity.
